Surprise Luncheon for Granny at Payne's

It's hard to pull a good surprise on someone... but I think we pulled it off.

Last week we planned and hosted a Surprise 80th Birthday Luncheon for Elizabeth. When she and her friend Sue came in she almost lost it. Tears welled up and her was opened mouth. I truly think we surprise her! Lots of fun!

Catch up...

So far we haven't been very good at keeping this blog updated but I hope to do better.

Things at Payne's are going better than we could have ever imagined! We have Paula helping with the cooking. Jug keeping all the dishes done and helping with plating. Jackie in her regular spot making all the sandwiches. Georgia is now at Payne's full time and I think she is really enjoying. Molly is helping some now that school is out. Granny Elizabeth helps bus tables when she comes in to eat and I even caught Steve clearing a table or two when needed.

We have a Daily Special Monday through Friday, that everyone seems to enjoy. The regular menu still includes the traditional favorites: hot dogs with red slaw, homemade chicken salad, tuna salad, and pimento cheese. We have added a second chicken salad that only has celery, grapes, and mayo that is probably our #1 sandwich seller (except for hot dogs!!) We also have the hamburger, cheeseburger, baked ham, and club sandwiches.

We have added a Reuben Sandwich, and a Cranberry Turkey Sandwich to the regular menu. We also now offer a Mixed Spring Greens Mandarin Salad with Grilled Chicken and a Strawberry Pecan Spinach Salad with Grilled Chicken. I think our homemade dressing are a hit and are helping to 'sell' the salads.

The daily specials are a lot like what you would expect on a 'Blue Plate Special' or a Meat and three. Paula cooks up some of her specials like Pork Tenderloin, Pitted Ham, Country Fried Steak, Mashed Potatoes, Green Beans, Pintos, and the like. They are currently cooking around 40 -45 specials each day and they are usually gone by 12:00 . People have started calling in and reserving their plates around 10:00 lately!

Georgia has also started offering whole pies and cakes for sale. And does some awesome 'CupCakes by the Dozen' in very unusual flavors like - Key Lime, Reese's Chocolate, Neapolitan, Margarita, and others.

Coming soon will be afternoon Birthday Parties and maybe even Cooking Classes!

Wow....

Things have been super busy at Payne's and it is very exciting. Paula and the girls are currently preparing around 40 specials everyday and still running out around 12:00noon.

We have added a new twist--- We have a contest of who will be the GUEST MENU PLANNER each week. Last week PENNY AND MARY from JOB SEEKERS selected a SPRING SALAD TRIO PLATE. This week, VICKI WATTS from the SCOTTSBORO ELECTRIC POWER BOARD will be deciding. I think she is leaning toward a HOBO dinner.... but I'll let you know for sure.

I have several new recipes that I would like for them to try for specials....

2. Turkey w/Cranberry Vermouth Sauce
3. Squash Casserole

Wow! What a scrumptious plate. Mexican Chicken Casserole, Salad, Corn Salas, and Mexican Corn Bread! This was the "Plate" special on Thursday!

Dumplings on Tuesday

Tuesday will be Chicken and Dumplings at Payne's.

Paula will be rolling out those long wonderful strips of dough that will be floated in boiling seasoned chicken broth. Almost immediately they will become what I have grown up calling "SLICKERS". Added with white meat chicken, this becomes a comfort food for most of us.

So what type of Dumplings did you grow up with? Slickers? or Puffy pillow like dumplings?

Some had some doubts....

Paula and Georgia discussed if it would ever come together. But low and behold it did!

Renovations at Payne's Sandwich Shop and Soda Fountain

It took a week longer than we had hoped, but Payne's has had a face lift. New black and white tiles! New and reinforce floor behind the Soda Fountain! New floor in kitchen! New lights in the kitchen! Lots of new bright white paint! Even the menu chalkboard has been repainted!

It still looks a lot like it did..... but much cleaner, brighter, and much more structural sound! Thanks for everyone that pitched in on the work! And thank you to the customer that were so patient

while we were closed.

Just a note that GC #1 & 3 spent the night last night. I had forgoten what a 10 day old baby was like to have around. Very little sleep... in fact she really didn't go sound enough asleep that I could lay her down until 6am. and then she slept for a solid 2 hours... yawn!

I changed her diaper 7 times during the night and changed her clothes 2 times.... that preemie diaper don't hold much! But is very sweet!
